|Java Journey began as a non-profit coffee shop ministry through the efforts of Jeff and Teena Stewart who served in institutional church ministry for years. Jeff, an ordained minister with the Evangelical Covenant Church, and his wife, Teena came to a place where they felt the church as they knew it wasn’t culturally relevant. With God’s leading, they embarked on an out of the box ministry to bring the love of Christ to a spiritually thirsty world.Their approach was to create a safe and neutral environment, a non-profit, fully operational coffee shop in Hickory, NC—Java Journey—where people felt safe and could relax and hangout and where gentle guidance was offered to those who wished to discuss spiritual matters without a heavy-handed approach. As often happens when God is at the helm, many lives were touched, but this was not the final form of the ministry. Eventually, God led the Stewarts to close the coffee shop doors and continue ministry in a simpler and less costly form. Currently Java Journey is in transition and as of this update, we minister in several areas.
Sunday Morning Gatherings. We gather on Sunday mornings for candid discussion at A Place to Talk (pastored by Josh McDowell), 1546 Brookford Church Rd., Hickory, NC 28602. In similar fashion to Java’s former Sunday evening gatherings, we resonate with the approach used by Josh of delving into God’s Word and looking at original context and meaning, encouraging audience participation as we strip away misconceptions we may have previously formed and look at the lessons about God and Christ with fresh eyes. Though we may not always agree with each other, we believe the process is more about the faith journey as we each individually go through transformation than it is about being assured that we as believers have it all figured out. Jeff also leads some of these discussions. Morning meeting times are at 9:00 am and 11:00 am on Sundays.
Feet on Our Faith. We believe that as followers of Christ we are not just to sit and study his teachings but are to show compassion to a hurting world. We meet the first Sunday evening of the month at 7:00 pm to discuss and plan possible charitable, hands-on events where we can give back to charitable causes. Those we have participated in thus far include writing Christmas cards to military personnel, helping with Foster Care events, preparing meals for local soup kitchens, and holding a yard sale to help raise funds for our dream of a coffee roaster.
The Coffee Roaster. Java Journey remains true to its coffee roots in that we have a goal of raising enough funds that will allow for a simple coffee roaster. Once we reach this goal, we will begin roasting and selling bagged coffee, the proceeds of which will go toward charitable causes for our Feet on Our Faith ministry.
We still have some items left to sell from the liquidation of our coffee shop. Proceeds help pay the balance of our loan and will also go toward the coffee roaster. Here’s the to view this inventory link.
